Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the main anatomical variants and morphofunctional alterations in the lower limb that compress surrounding nervous structures in the gluteal region, thigh region, and leg and foot region. Methods: We searched the Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, CINAHL, and LILACS databases from their inception up to October 2023. An assurance tool for anatomical studies (AQUA) was used to evaluate methodological quality, and the Joanna Briggs Institute assessment tool for case reports was also used. Forest plots were generated to assess the prevalence of variants of the gluteal region, thigh, and leg. Results: According to the forest plot of the gluteal region, the prevalence was 0.18 (0.14-0.23), with a heterogeneity of 93.52%. For the thigh region, the forest plot presented a prevalence of 0.10 (0.03-0.17) and a heterogeneity of 91.18%. The forest plot of the leg region was based on seven studies, which presented a prevalence of 0.01 (0.01-0.01) and a heterogeneity of 96.18%. Conclusions: This review and meta-analysis showed that, in studies that analyzed nerve compressions, the prevalence was low in the thigh and leg regions, while in the gluteal region, it was slightly higher. This is mainly due to the PM region and its different variants. We believe that it is important to analyze all the variant regions defined in this study and that surgeons treating the lower limb should be attentive to these possible scenarios so that they can anticipate possible surgical situations and thus avoid surgical complications.

OBJECTIVE: Aim: To study the clinical anatomy of the pulmonary ligaments of young people. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and Methods: The study was carried out when performing 28 autopsies of young people aged 25 to 44 years. Methods of dissection of chest organocomplexes, macro-microscopy, morphometry and planimetry, and statistical processing were used. The shape and topography of the pulmonary ligaments was assessed, their area, the localization of lymph nodes was examined. RESULTS: Results: The pulmonary ligament is an anatomical formation, which is formed as a result of a combination of leaves of the mediastinal pleura, which, covering the surfaces of the roots of the lungs, descend towards the diaphragm and are located between the mediastinal organs and the lungs. Pulmonary connections on both sides have a few edges: the inner, outer and lower free. The pulmonary ligaments with lower free edges do not pass to the diaphragmatic surface of the pleura, but only with inner ones, which are located on the right along the esophagus, and on the left along the aorta. Pulmonary ligaments on both sides pass into the mediastinal part of the pleura, covering the pericardium. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: There are individual differences between the shape and size of the right and left pulmonary ligaments in males and females. There is no significant difference between the sizes of the right and left pulmonary ligaments, but such dimensions as: the width, the angle of inclination and the ratio of their lower free edge to the lower edge of the lungs are not found in all cases.

BACKGROUND: The term Anterior Accessory of the Great Saphenous Vein suggests this is a branch tributary vein despite this vessel's anatomic features of a truncal vein. A multisocietal group suggested to designate this the anterior saphenous vein (ASV). This study was aimed to evaluate its ultrasound anatomy in normal and varicose limbs. METHODS: The clinical anatomy of the ASV was evaluated by narrative review of the literature. Additionally, the course of the ASV was evaluated in 62 limbs with no evidence of venous disease and 62 limbs with varicosities. RESULTS: The ASV length, patterns of origin and termination are reported in both normal and patients with varicose veins. Discussion of the patterns is supported by the narrative review of the literature. CONCLUSIONS: The ASV must be considered a truncal vein and its treatment modalities should be the same that for the great and small saphenous veins rather than a tributary vein.

PURPOSE: In this article, we report a case of an atypical inferior gluteal artery that passed through the piriformis muscle when it emerged from the pelvic cavity in an elderly Japanese female cadaver. We speculate that this atypical artery could be entrapped and compressed by the piriformis muscle and may therefore be associated with piriformis syndrome; however, the anatomical characteristics of such an atypical artery have not been previously reported. To assess this potential association, the atypical inferior gluteal artery was anatomically examined. METHODS: The cadaver examined in this report was a 97-year-old Japanese female who was donated to The Nippon Dental University for use in medical education and research. The atypical inferior gluteal artery and surrounding structures in half of the pelvis were examined macroscopically. RESULTS: The atypical inferior gluteal artery arose from the common arterial trunk, formed by itself and the superior gluteal artery, passed through the superior proximal part of the piriformis muscle, and left the pelvic cavity. It supplies branches to the lower half of the gluteus maximus and proximal part of the long head of the biceps femoris muscle. The piriformis muscle originates from the 2nd to 4th sacral vertebrae and attaches to the greater trochanter via a single short tendon. CONCLUSION: According to our findings, when the atypical inferior gluteal artery is entrapped and compressed, ischemic signs and symptoms may emerge in the lower buttocks and proximal posterior thigh. These results provide a new perspective for the diagnosis and treatment of piriformis syndrome.

Effective communication and precise navigation within the intricacies of the human body rely on robust anatomical terminology. Since its creation by the Federative Committee on Anatomical Terminology (FCAT), the Terminologia Anatomica (TA 1998) has consistently served as the benchmark in the field. However, the constant advancement of anatomical knowledge requires regular revisions, updates, and enhancements of anatomical nomenclature to accommodate the latest scientific discoveries. The recent adoption of the second edition of Terminologia Anatomica (TA 2019) by the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA) has drawn attention to certain notable omissions. Despite over a century of dedicated work establishing standard anatomical terminology, specific widely recognized gross anatomical structures are still absent from the official listing in the Terminologia Anatomica. There is, however, a consensus that the inclusion of names for trivial or variably present structures should be avoided. Accordingly, this article focuses on a thoughtfully selected group of anatomical structures, which are so important that they are routinely discussed during anatomy courses, despite their exclusion from the official lists of anatomical terms. These basic structures hold fundamental importance for both anatomy education and clinical practice. Consequently, their appropriate nomenclature warrants consideration for inclusion in future editions of TA.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of anatomical variants in the bifid mandibular condyle (BMC) and report its association with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pathology. METHODS: We searched the Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, CINAHL, and LILACS databases from their inception up to September 2023. Two authors independently performed the search, study selection, and data extraction, and they also assessed the methodological quality with an assurance tool for anatomical studies (AQUA). Finally, the pooled prevalence was estimated using a random effects model. RESULTS: A total of 50 studies met the eligibility criteria. Twenty studies, with a total of 88,625 subjects, were included in the meta-analysis. The overall prevalence of the bifid mandibular condyle (BMC) variant was 1% (95% CI = 1% to 2%). CONCLUSIONS: The correlation between the BMC and TMJ pathologies has a relatively low prevalence in studies that present a considerable number of subjects. From a clinical point of view, a direct association cannot be made between the presence of the BMC and TMJ pathologies or symptoms.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of MRI images to reveal foraminal ligaments at levels L1-L5 by comparing the results with those of anatomical studies. METHODS: Eighty lumbar foramina were studied. First, the best MRI scanning parameters were selected, and the transverse and sagittal axes of each lumbar foramina were scanned to identify and record the ligament-like structures in each lumbar foramen. Then, the cadaveric specimens were anatomically studied, and all ligament structures in the lumbar foramina were retained. The number, morphology and distribution of ligaments under anatomical and MRI scanning were observed. Histological staining of the dissected ligament structures was performed to confirm that they were ligamentous tissues. Finally, the accuracy of ligament recognition in MRI images was statistically analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 233 foraminal ligaments were identified in 80 lumbar intervertebral foramina through cadaveric anatomy. The radiating ligaments (176, 75.5%) were found to be attached from the nerve root to the surrounding osseous structures, while the transforaminal ligaments (57, 24.5%) traversed the intervertebral foramina without any connection to the nerve roots. A total of 42 transforaminal ligament signals and 100 radiating ligament signals were detected in the MRI images of the 80 intervertebral foramina. CONCLUSION: The MRI can identify the lumbar foraminal ligament, and the recognition rate of the transforaminal ligament is higher than that of the radiating ligament. This study provides a new method for the clinical diagnosis of the relationship between the lumbar foraminal ligament and radicular pain.

Since its inception, the International Anatomical Terminology has been an indispensable and widely embraced resource for authors, anatomists, researchers, and medical professionals, ensuring standardized anatomical terminology across various disciplines. Nonetheless, it is widely acknowledged that periodic updates and enhancements are necessary to incorporate the latest scientific knowledge and advancements in imaging techniques. The current version of Terminologia Anatomica includes a section dedicated to the paranasal sinuses, encompassing ethmoidal cells and three sinuses: frontal, sphenoidal, and maxillary. However, the anatomical lexicon pertaining to the paranasal sinuses is more extensive. In clinical practice, multiple terms related to clinically significant structures are commonly employed. This article focuses on the clinical terminology associated with the paranasal sinuses, proposing significant extensions to the existing Terminologia Anatomica. These extensions aim to enrich the anatomical nomenclature and facilitate a harmonious convergence between the language of clinicians and the anatomical lexicon. Further endeavors should bridge the gap in anatomical nomenclature and improve communication between anatomists, researchers, and clinicians, thereby enhancing diagnostic accuracy and improving interdisciplinary research collaboration.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review analyzes the anatomical variants in the pancreas and its ductal system to report on their association with pancreatic pathologies. METHODS: We conducted a search of the MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, CINAHL, and LILACS databases from their inception to July 2023. The methodological quality was assessed with the Anatomical Quality Assessment (AQUA) tool. Finally, the pooled prevalence was estimated using a random effects model. RESULTS: 55 studies were found that met the eligibility criteria. The overall prevalence of pancreas divisum (PD) was 18% (95% CI = 15-21%). The prevalence of PD associated with pancreatitis was 30% (95% CI = 1-61%). CONCLUSIONS: An anatomical variant of the pancreas such as PD may be the cause of bile duct obstruction, resulting in various clinical complications, such as pancreatitis. Hence, knowing this variant is extremely important for surgeons, especially for those who treat the gastroduodenal region.

This chapter begins by exploring the current landscape of virtual and augmented reality technologies in a post-pandemic world and asserting the importance of virtual technologies that improve students' learning outcomes while also reducing costs. Next, the chapter describes clinical anatomy instruction concepts in medical education, including applied anatomy content knowledge, pedagogical anatomy content knowledge, and virtual stereoscopic visualization studies that exemplify these concept areas, respectively. The chapter then explores the concept of procedural training with a specific emphasis on virtual stereoscopic anatomy visualization studies that exemplify or have implications for procedural training in medical education. Subsequently, the chapter discusses the benefits and challenges as well as the potential future positive and negative implications of virtual stereoscopic visualizations in medical education before finally concluding with some pensive considerations for the present and future of anatomy education and training using virtual technologies.

BACKGROUND: Some reports have used pigs to establish models of meniscus injury. However, accurate information on the origin, course, and access of the arteries supplying the menisci remains unclear. This information is important to avoid damaging vital arteries when creating the meniscus injury model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, fetal and adult pigs were employed to investigate the arterial supply of the menisci in pigs using gross anatomical and histological methods. RESULTS: Macro-anatomically, the anterior horn, body, and posterior horn of the medial meniscus were found to be supplied by the medial superior genicular artery, medial inferior genicular artery, and posterior middle genicular artery. The anterior and posterior horns of the lateral meniscus were supplied by the cranial tibial recurrent artery and the middle genicular artery, respectively. Anastomosis was observed in some cases, but appeared to be infrequent and too thin to expect the anastomotic branches to provide adequate blood flow. The histological examination showed that the arteries entered the meniscus along the tie-fiber. The access process of the artery was the same irrespective of whether it was in fetal or mature pigs, the medial or lateral meniscus, or the anterior horn or body or posterior horn. The medial inferior genicular artery ran along the medial meniscus in the circumferential direction. Therefore, the clinical longitudinal incision should take into account the characteristics of the vessel course in order to protect the blood vessels from damage. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of this study, the protocol for creating a pig meniscus injury model should be reconsidered.

El uso de nuevos recursos tecnológicos en la enseñanza de anatomía ha impulsado la necesidad de adaptar el modelo educativo haciéndolo más centrado en el estudiante, dinámico y participativo mediante herramientas digitales y 3D; orientando los conocimientos hacia su aplicación clínica, pero bajo un ajuste curricular que tiende a cursar menos horas presenciales en aula o laboratorio. Este trabajo describe la experiencia local de una nueva Escuela de Medicina en Chile, reportada el año 2018, además y otros trabajos de centros formadores presentados en el "SECTRA Users Meeting 2019 Estocolmo", Karolinska Institutet, Suecia. Este trabajo describe los reportes orales sobre la aplicación de nuevos recursos digitales como; la mesa de disección digital táctil SECTRA® y modelos anatómicos cadavéricos impresos en 3D Erler-Zimmer®, bases de datos sobre anatomía digital, además, su impacto en el desempeño académico, reportado por usuarios de diferentes países, tales como: Australia, Canadá, Chile, China, Colombia, Estados Unidos de Norteamérica (EUA) y Suecia. Los datos fueron recopilados y analizados a partir de la información reportada en las presentaciones orales y resúmenes entregados por los expositores. La gran mayoría de los países expositores declararon el uso combinado de recursos digitales y 3D sumados a los tradicionales para la enseñanza de anatomía. Sólo el representante de EUA declaró usar exclusivamente recursos digitales (en laboratorio y en línea), experiencia correspondiente a una joven e innovadora escuela de medicina. La mayoría de los centros docentes declaró utilizar la mesa de disección digital en una amplia proporción de sus contenidos curriculares, en asociación a plataformas tipo RIS/PACS como IDS7 portal de SECTRA o las utilizadas por el centro formador. El uso de nuevas tecnologías digitales y 3D ha ganado un importante espacio en el currículum de la enseñanza de anatomía, complementando el uso de los recursos tradicionales.


SUMMARY: The use of new technological resources in the teaching of anatomy has promoted the need to adapt the educational model, making it more student-centered, dynamic, and participatory through digital and 3D tools, directing the knowledge towards its clinical application, but under a curricular adjustment that tends to take fewer contact hours in the classroom or laboratory. This work describes the local experience of a new School of Medicine in Chile, reported in 2018, and other work from training centers presented at the "SECTRA Users Meeting 2019 Stockholm", Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. This work describes the oral reports on the application of new digital resources such as; the SECTRA® digital tactile dissection table and Erler- Zimmer® 3D printed cadaveric anatomical models, databases on digital anatomy, in addition, its impact on academic performance, reported by users from different countries, such as Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, United States of America (USA) and Sweden. The data was collected and analyzed from the information reported in the oral presentations and summaries delivered by the speakers.The vast majority of the exhibiting countries declared the combined use of digital and 3D resources added to the traditional ones for teaching anatomy. Only the representative from the USA stated that they exclusively used digital resources (in the laboratory and online), an experience corresponding to a young and innovative medical school. Most of the educational centers stated that they used the digital dissection table in a large proportion of their curricular contents, in association with RIS/PACS-type platforms such as the IDS7 SECTRA portal or those used by the training center. The use of new digital and 3D technologies has gained an important space in the anatomy teaching curriculum, complementing the use of traditional resources.

INTRODUCTION: The recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is the structure responsible for sensory and motor innervation of the larynx, and it has been shown that its lesion due to a lack of surgical rigor led to alterations such as respiratory obstruction due to vocal cords paralysis and permanent phonation impairment. The objectives of this review were to know the variants of the RLN and its clinical relevance in the neck region. METHODS: This review considered specific scientific articles that were written in Spanish or English and published between 1960 and 2022. A systematic search was carried out in the electronic databases MEDLINE, WOS, CINAHL, SCOPUS, SCIELO, and Latin American and Caribbean Center for Information on Health Sciences to compile the available literature on the subject to be treated and was enrolled in PROSPERO. The included articles were studies that had a sample of RLN dissections or imaging, intervention group to look for RLN variants, or the comparison of the non-recurrent laryngeal nerve (NRLN) variants, and finally, its clinical correlations. Review articles and letters to the editor were excluded. All included articles were evaluated through quality assessment and risk of bias analysis using the methodological quality assurance tool for anatomical studies (AQUA). The extracted data in the meta-analysis were interpreted to calculate the prevalence of the RLN variants and their comparison and the relationship between the RLN and NRLN. The heterogeneity degree between included studies was assessed. RESULTS: The included studies that showed variants of the RLN included in this review were 41, a total of 29,218. For the statistical analysis of the prevalence of the RLN variant, a forest plot was performed with 15 studies that met the condition of having a prevalence of less than 100%. As a result, the prevalence was shown to be 12% (95% CI, SD 0.11 to 0.14). Limitations that were present in this review were the publication bias of the included studies, the probability of not having carried out the most sensitive and specific search, and finally, the authors' personal inclinations in selecting the articles. DISCUSSION: This meta-analysis can be considered based on an update of the prevalence of RLN variants, in addition to considering that the results show some clinical correlations such as intra-surgical complications and with some pathologies and aspects function of the vocal cords, which could be a guideline in management prior to surgery or of interest for the diagnostic.

Clerkships are defining experiences for medical students in which students integrate basic science knowledge with clinical information as they gain experience in diagnosing and treating patients in a variety of clinical settings. Among the basic sciences, there is broad agreement that anatomy is foundational for medical practice. Unfortunately, there are longstanding concerns that student knowledge of anatomy is below the expectations of clerkship directors and clinical faculty. Most allopathic medical schools require eight "core" clerkships: internal medicine (IM), pediatrics (PD), general surgery (GS), obstetrics and gynecology (OB), psychiatry (PS), family medicine (FM), neurology (NU), and emergency medicine (EM). A targeted needs assessment was conducted to determine the anatomy considered important for each core clerkship based on the perspective of clinicians teaching in those clerkships. A total of 525 clinical faculty were surveyed at 24 United States allopathic medical schools. Participants rated 97 anatomical structure groups across all body regions on a 1-4 Likert-type scale (1 = not important, 4 = essential). Non-parametric ANOVAs determined if differences existed between clerkships. Combining all responses, 91% of anatomical structure groups were classified as essential or more important. Clinicians in FM, EM, and GS rated anatomical structures in most body regions significantly higher than at least one other clerkship (p = 0.006). This study provides an evidence-base of anatomy content that should be considered important for each core clerkship and may assist in the development and/or revision of preclinical curricula to support the clinical training of medical students.

Background: Human anatomy is a predominant course that helps medical students enhance their performance in other clinical curricula. However, it is difficult for students to learn the relationship between anatomy and diseases, since the traditional teaching modality of anatomy courses does not contain enough clinical contents. Clinical anatomy education merges clinical diagnosis and treatment into anatomy learning. This study seeks to determine whether systematic clinical anatomy teaching can improve students' performance and interest in anatomy courses. Methods: This study was a retrospective study conducted at West China Medical School, Sichuan University. Medical students of the 8-year program who participated in the course "HUMAN MORPHOLOGY" in the academic years of 2014-2018 did not receive a systematic clinical anatomy course, while those in the academic years of 2018-2022 did. These two groups were involved to analyze their final examination. Then, a questionnaire for students in the academic year of 2021-2022 was conducted to assess their general satisfaction and opinions on the usefulness and learning modalities of clinical anatomy courses. Results: Students who received systematic clinical anatomy lessons performed significantly better than those who were not in the final examinations. The average grades were 73.64 and 79.90 in the 3rd semester of medicine (p < 0.0001) and 75.70 and 82.18 in the 4th semester of medicine (p < 0.0001) before and after 2018, respectively. The response rate of the questionnaire was 77.78%, and most of the students agreed that the clinical anatomy lessons were satisfactory, with 40 out of 71 (56.34%) strongly agreeing and 26 out of 71 (36.62%) agreeing. Conclusion: Clinical anatomy education should be more emphasized and merged into the gross anatomy curriculum owing to the better performance in the final examination and high rate of satisfaction.

PURPOSE: The anatomical literature describes the abductor pollicis longus as a muscle with a single tendon inserting on the base of the first metacarpal bone, but investigations have shown that it often exhibits morphological variations. However, methodological approaches used to describe these variations have not been useful in a clinical context. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to study and relate such anatomical variations in a clinical context. BASIC PROCEDURES: Thirty upper limbs from the body donation program were dissected using standard procedures to identify the number of abductor pollicis longus (APL) tendons, their position, site of insertion, length, width and thickness. The presence or absence of the extensor pollicis brevis muscle was also noted. Inter and intra-observer reliability was analysed. MAIN FINDINGS: A total number of 71 tendons from the APL muscle were found in the thirty limbs. The most frequent distribution pattern was a main tendon inserted on the base of the first metacarpal and an accessory tendon inserted into the abductor pollicis brevis muscle. These tendons could divide into various tendinous slips that could insert in different locations. Also, clustering algorithms and classical statistical tests showed tendons inserting on the first metacarpal were longer than tendons not inserting on the first metacarpal (p = 0.03), while medial tendons and tendons from an APL muscle with supernumerary tendons were narrower (p < 0.001). The absence of the extensor pollicis brevis muscle was not related to the presence of supernumerary APL tendons. CONCLUSIONS: Radiological and surgical implications of these results are important when examining this region of the hand and wrist. The pathophysiology and treatment of de Quervain's tenosynovitis, trapeziometacarpal arthritis and trapeziometacarpal subluxation or laxity could be influenced by the results of our findings.

INTRODUCTION: the world studies showed the interest in measurement of the buccal or anterior cortical plate thickness. Data indicate a significant superiority of the spongy substance over the compact one in the distal part of the jaw, which makes it possible to think about a higher effectiveness of transcortical injections. The empirical "rule of 10″ provides for the choice of a method of anesthesia in children for primary teeth but demonstrates difficulties with high-quality anesthesia accompanied for permanent teeth. Therefore, the importance of clinical examination and anatomical investigation of the jaw cortical plate in children for competent planning of transcortical interventions has been determined. AIM: To study the features of the clinical and X-ray anatomy of the cortical layer in distal alveolar part of the mandible in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The assessment of the X-ray anatomical characteristics of the mandible was carried out according to 150 anonymized cone-beam computed tomograms of patients aged 6-12 years, performed for the treatment of major diseases. Qualitative assessment and examination of the cortical plate of the distal alveolar part of the mandible were carried out on the skeletonized certified preparations of aged 6-12 in the amount of 50. RESULTS: The age characteristics of the cortical plate in the area of the chewing group of teeth in the mandible were determined according to macro anatomical studies, which confirms with the X-ray results. Therefore, the obtained images serve as actual confirmation of X-ray studies, which are ranked by age. The thickness of the cortical plate in the second primary molar of the mandible in subgroups 6, 7 and 8 years has a proportional increase from the cervical region to the apical projection. The average thickness of the cortical plate is 1.57 mm at 6 years, 1.52 mm at 7 years, 1.6 mm at 8 years and 1.84 at 9 years. The cortical plate thickness in the first primary molar of the mandible in subgroups 6 and 7 years has a proportional decrease from the cervical region to the apical projection as well as an inverse proportion to age. The average thickness of the cortical plate is 1.33 mm. In the first molar of the mandible at the age limit of 6-12 years the attention is drawn to the linear increase in tissue volume from the cervical region to the apical projection up to 8 years. At 6-8 years the average thickness of the cortical plate in this age group is 1.74 ± 0.2 mm, at 9 years - 2.03 mm, at 10 - average value in the cervical region it is 1.53 ± 0.23 mm, in the root middle it is 2.19 ± 0.13 mm and in the apical projection it is 1.98 ± 0.16 mm, at 11-2.22 mm and at 12-2.35 mm. For the second primary molar the average thickness of the buccal cortical plate of the second primary molar is 1.4 mm in cervical part, 1.68 mm in the root middle and 1.81 mm in the apical projection. Finally, thickness of the buccal cortical plate in the cervical region of the first permanent molar is 2 mm in groups. CONCLUSION: The study makes it possible to determinate with noninvasive way the age limit for the least pronounced zone of the buccal cortical plate.
